Round 1:  With Color A, 6 sc st in MC, place a stitch marker in the 1st sc made.  Do not join with sl st to 1st st after last sc st. (6) Note:  leave a long tail from MC as this will be used for the hanging loop.

Note:  Continue moving up your stitch marker to the 1st st of each round.

Round 2:  1 sc in each st around. (6)

Round 3:  2 sc in 1st st, sc in remaining st. (7)

Round 4 – 16:  repeat round 3. (st count = 20 at the end of round 16) 

Fasten off Color A.

Round 17:  With Color B, TURN, (now working on the WS of hat), ch 3, dc in same st, sl st in next st, *bobble in next st, sl st in next st* repeat between * * to end, sl st to base of 1st st from beginning of round.

Fasten off.  Weave in ends.

Knot yarn before pushing needle down through top of hat

To make the loop for hanging, with long tail left from MC, tie a simple sewing knot by inserting needle in crochet fabric to create a loop of yarn, then inserting needle through loop of yarn and pulling tight. This will prevent MC from coming loose.  Push needle down into top of hat, leaving a loop large enough for hanging, knot off again inside hat and weave in end.

Nose (worked in seamless rounds)

Round 1:  With Color C, 3 sc st in MC, place a stitch marker in the 1st sc made.  Do not join with sl st to 1st st after last sc st.  (3)

Note:  Continue moving up your stitch marker to the 1st st of each round.

Round 2:  2 sc in each st.  (6)

Round 3:  sc2tog 3 times. Join with sl st to first st. (3). Fasten off.  Pull yarn through last st, sew yarn end through front loop of each of the 3 st, pull tight to close the circle.

Cut faux fur material to size desired for beard approx 2 1/4” wide at top x 2 1/2” long to tip.  Taper cut slightly going towards bottom of beard.  With embroidery thread, sew top of beard to bottom edge of the inside of hat. OR use super glue to attach to hat.

Sew or glue beard to inside bottom edge of hat

With a long length of Color A, sew nose to inside bottom edge of hat in the middle OR use a small dab of super glue to glue to bottom edge of hat on top of beard.  

Sew or glue snowflake button embellishment to hat, if desired.

If you would like the hat to be more filled out, add a small amount of scrap yarn or poly fill to stuff and then sew or glue closed to secure.

Assembly:

Step 1: Face

First, we need to attach and stitch on our facial features to the front panel.

Insert 10mm safety eyes into the front panel at row 15 and approximately 5 stitches in from each side.

Next, position the beak so that it is between the eyes, and lined up with the top of the belly. Stitch the beak in place using the long tail.

Finally, stitch the little feet onto each side of the belly and add some cheeks by stitching some pink yarn around a stitch under each eye a couple of times.

Step 2: Body

Okay, here are the pieces you should now have at this step.

Place the two body panels together, matching up all sides and colours.

Make sure the front of your Penguin is facing you as you crochet around the outside of the piece.

Starting on the left side at the top, begin attaching the panels together by single crocheting around the outside of the panels starting in blue.

Be sure to crochet loosely around so that the edge keeps it’s nice curve!

Crochet down to the top of the belly. Change colours to white.

Continue single crocheting around the bottom. Switch back to blue when necessary.

Continue crocheting up the other side and stop when you reach the top. Stuff your penguin!

Continue single crocheting across the top. Top up stuffing as you go as necessary. Use the back of your crochet hook to even out the stuffing and keep the shape nice and round.

When you are satisfied with the stuffing, close with a slst to first st. Tie off. With your tapestry needle, poke the yarn tail back inside the piece. Finish with some needle sculpting for the eyes, add the loop for hanging, and you’re done!

Use 1.75 mm crochet and Gazzal Baby Cotton yarn to knit the dwarf toy. You will also need 8mm black half beads or eyes on a secure mount, a decorative button to decorate the lid, dry pastels to tone the cheeks and filler.

The pattern is extremely easy! Just rows of single crochet stitches, switching color as desired or as the pattern calls for. You will crochet two separate pieces and then stitch (or crochet ) the two pieces together along the edges. I love this technique because it makes it very easy to add embellishments like the button eyes and carrot nose!

Back Ear (make 2):

Using 3.25mm hook and with brown yarn, repeat rounds 1 and 2 of the front ear but in brown only.

Place the front ear panel on top of the back ear panel and crochet the two pieces together by crocheting around the two pieces in brown, joining them. Stuff lightly when you’ve crocheted about two-thirds of the way around. Join with a slst to first st and tie off. Poke the yarn tail back inside.

Antlers (make 4):

Using 3.25mm hook and using dark brown yarn.

Row 1: Ch 2, Sc 1 (1 st)

Rows 2-6: Sc 1 (1 st)

Row 7: Inc (2 sts)

Row 8: In first st only (leave other st unworked), sc 1 (1 st)

Rows 9-11: Sc 1 (1 st)

Tie off. Rejoin yarn in the unworked st of row 7 and repeat rows 8-11. Tie off.

Repeat all of the above for the back panel. Weave in ends and trim them (so they don’t get in the way while joining). Place both panels together and sc around to join. You don’t need to stuff the antlers (there’s really no space to insert stuffing anyway!)

Repeat all of the above for the second antler.

Assembly:

Step 1: Face

First, we need to attach and stitch on our facial features to the front panel.

Stitch on the nose at the base of the brown stripe on the face.

Stitch on happy eyes using black crochet thread (or insert safety eyes if you prefer).

Step 2: Body, Ears and Antlers

Here are the pieces you should now have at this step.

Cut off two lengths of brown yarn approximately 30cm/12″ long each and set them aside for later.

Place the two panels together, matching up all sides and colours.

Make sure the front of Rudolph is facing you as you crochet around the outside.

Starting on the left side, in the middle where the white section starts, begin attaching the panels together by single crocheting around the outside of the panels starting in white.

Be sure to crochet loosely around so that the edge keeps it’s nice curve!

Crochet down and around the bottom and up the other side; switch to brown yarn where appropriate.

Stop after two or three stitches and pull up a loop.

Now we will attach the first ear and antler. The ear will overlap the antler slightly; feel free to stitch these together first before stitching them between the panels if it’s easier for you.

With your tapestry needle and a length of yarn that you set aside earlier, place the ear and the antler between the panels just to the right of the end of the last row of the panels. Stitch in place by stitching through all three pieces, the back panel, the ear/antler and the front panel. Once in place, tie a knot in the yarn tails and hide them between the panels.

Continue crocheting around. When you get to the ear/antler, sc in the stitches of the front panel only. This section is already sewn shut so it’s just for looks!

Stuff your ornament firmly now!

Continue crocheting both panels together as normal once past the antler, topping up stuffing as you go.

Place and stitch on the second antler and ear the same way you did for the first.

Top up stuffing. Use the back of your crochet hook to even out the stuffing and keep the shape nice and round.

When you are satisfied with the stuffing, close with a slst to first st. Tie off. With your tapestry needle, poke the yarn tail back inside the piece. Add the loop for hanging, and you’re done!
